Our Favorite Safari Escape for Big Cat Lovers

When we think back to our time in the Serengeti, Namiri Plains stands out as one of the special places we’ve visited. It’s tucked away in the remote eastern part of the park - technically still Central Serengeti, but far enough east that you really feel like you’ve escaped the crowds. What’s wild is that this area used to be completely off-limits to the public because it was reserved for big cat research. So from the start, we knew we were heading somewhere truly unique.

From the moment we arrived, it felt like the Serengeti was putting on a private show just for us. The camp sits in the heart of big cat territory, and we saw more cheetahs and lions that we could count. We even spotted lion cubs lounging on these incredible rock formations that dot the landscape—it was like something out of a dream. One of us may or may not have jokingly suggested smuggling a cub home (don’t worry, we didn’t). They were that cute.

And the best part? Hardly anyone else was around. The isolation of Namiri Plains means you often have sightings all to yourself. It felt like our own private slice of the Serengeti.

Namiri Plains has come a long way from its roots as a basic research camp. Now it’s a gorgeous, premier-level safari lodge—but without the stuffiness. When we arrived, the entire staff came out to greet us with singing and dancing, which immediately set the tone. It wasn’t just warm; it was joyful. The energy, the smiles—it felt very nice and welcoming.

The camp manager, Dickson, was incredible—super attentive and clearly passionate about creating a memorable experience for every guest. One morning, our guide told us there was an exciting sighting ahead and drove us out… only to "discover" a fully set-up bush breakfast waiting for us. Another evening, they surprised us with sundowners up on the rocks as the sky was showcasing an amazing sunset.

Comfort and wilderness can and will go hand in hand here!

The rooms are beautiful! Each one has a private deck with a bathtub facing the plains. We didn’t get to use it (too many game drives and things to see), but the idea of soaking in a warm bath while watching zebras in the distance? That’s next on our list.

For those traveling as a family or in a small group, the Namiri Retreat units offer even more privacy and come with their own guide. It's perfect if you're looking for something extra special.

Our guide, Tare, was Maasai, and his knowledge—of the animals, the land, and his culture—added a whole new layer to our experience. He didn’t just point out wildlife; he told stories, taught us traditions, and made us laugh every step of the way. We left feeling like we had learned just as much about Tanzania’s people as we had about its wildlife.

So… why Namiri?

Honestly, it’s the total package: incredible wildlife, beautiful rooms, amazing food (they had the best mashed potatoes, simple yet super delicious), and warm, personalized service. And while it’s inside the Serengeti National Park, it feels incredibly private. It’s not the cheapest option, but for what you get—especially if you're into big cats—it’s 100% worth it.

If you're planning a safari and want somewhere that hits all the right notes, Namiri Plains is where you want to be. We honestly can't wait to go back.
